How it works

Your chapter in. A course out.

The same chapter you were going to read twice, turned into the four things that actually make it stick.

  • Vocabulary cards

Every word, with its meaning, scheduled so it comes back just before you would have forgotten it.

  • Grammar patterns

The patterns behind the sentences, with exercises written from words you already know.

  • Lesson tests

A short quiz per lesson, built from that lesson rather than from a generic bank.

  • A tutor to talk to

Conversation fenced by your own course, so it never uses a word you have not met.

Tests and grammar

Check yourself before the teacher does.

Every lesson comes with its own test and a grammar drill for each pattern — written from that lesson, so they ask what your class will ask.

Lesson test

A test per lesson

Four to twelve questions from that lesson: pick the right form or fill the gap. Get 80% and the lesson counts as done.

Grammar drill

A drill for every pattern

Translate, fill the gap or pick the form, in sentences built from words you know. Graded for grammar and meaning, not for typos.

Speaking practice

Say it out loud before class asks you to.

You speak, it hears you, it answers. No push-to-talk, no waiting, no transcript in between.

  • You follow every word — it uses only the ones your course has taught you
  • Cards you answer out loud count towards the same schedule
  • It remembers the last conversation and picks up where it left off
The method

How Duru decides what you practise

Not a product decision. A few findings from a century of memory research decide it — sourced on the method page, along with what Duru does not claim.

Spaced

Words come back at growing gaps

Minutes, then days, then weeks. Each right answer pushes a word further out; a miss brings it back today.

Recalled

You produce, Duru checks

Cards, tests and grammar drills all ask for the answer before they show it. No marking yourself.

Steered

Your mistakes pick what comes next

Misses are sorted by what went wrong — a particle, a tense, a speech level — and the words that keep catching you are worked into new drills, tests and conversations.

Spoken

Then you say it out loud

The tutor talks inside your course’s words and grammar and corrects as it goes. Its corrections join the same list as your typing.

How one word is scheduled: each review resets it, and each gap is longer than the last.Read more about Duru's method

Every time you get it right, the word fades more slowly — so the next review can wait longer.

Questions

Before you upload

Which languages can I learn with Duru?

Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Vietnamese, Thai, Turkish, Dutch, Polish, Indonesian, Arabic, Hindi and English. The app itself, explanations included, is in nine languages: English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Japanese, Korean and Chinese.

What kind of material can I upload?

PDFs, Word documents, PowerPoint slides, EPUB books, Anki decks (.apkg), or a zip of any of them. If your book is paper, photograph the pages with your phone. You can also paste text straight in — a word list, a handout, your own notes.

Does it work with scanned pages, photos or handwriting?

Scanned PDFs and photos work: Duru reads the text off the page. Clear, flat photos work best. Handwriting is hit and miss, so look over the words after importing — everything arrives as a draft you can edit.

What happens to the material I upload?

It stays in your own courses, and nobody else sees it. It is sent to AI providers only to be read and turned into exercises; it is never published, never sold, and never used to train a model of ours. You can delete it, or your whole account, whenever you like.

How is this different from Anki or Duolingo?

Duolingo teaches its own course; Duru turns yours into practice, so you study exactly what your class covers. In Anki you build every card by hand; Duru builds the cards, grammar drills, tests and a speaking tutor from your pages — and you can still export the cards to Anki.

Is the free plan enough to get started?

Yes: 3 lessons a month and 30 minutes with the tutor. Flashcards, tests and drills on everything you have imported stay free for good. Cancel a paid plan and you keep everything; only new imports and tutor time go back to the free amount.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. Duru runs in the browser on any device, and there is an app for Android, with iPhone coming soon. Your course and its schedule sync, so you can practise on the bus and carry on at your desk.
